What is
Reiki?
Historically, Reiki is a
3,000 year old Tibetan healing system rediscovered by Dr. Mikai Usui over
one hundred years ago. Dr. Usui brought Reiki to Japan where he
established a clinic for his practice, trained others and set up
apprenticeship programs. At his death the clinic and programs were passed
on to Hayashi.
In Dr. Usui’s time only
men were trained in Reiki. Hayashi broke the tradition by training Hawayo
Takata, an American lady of Japanese descent living in Hawaii. Later, Mrs.
Takata returned to the United States where she began practicing and
training other practitioners.
The word Reiki is a
combination of two Japanese words, REI means the higher intelligence that
guides creation. KI means the universal energy in all living things: e.g.
that which flows through the human body along meridians (as in
acupuncture), the same as "chi" in Chinese or "prana"
in Hindi/Sanskrit.
Ki, chi, or prana, electro-magnetic
energy is present in all living things. In the healthful state, the ki
flows freely along its pathways. When Ki is blocked, health is affected.
In a Reiki session, the practitioner, in this hands-on technique, brings
energy to key energy points on the client’s body to overcome blockages
of Ki. Reiki produces a wonderful state of relaxation and the technique
may be applied whether a person is in a chair or on a massage table. |
