Hypnotherapy
A little historical overview...
Ancient cultures utilized
hypnosis in sacred and occult practices. This was evident in the Oracles
of Delphi in Greece. And in Egypt, the goddess, Isis, is thought to have
employed hypnosis as pictured in some of the hieroglyphics. Hypnosis
experienced a renaissance in Europe with the work of Mesmer in a technique
called "animal magnetism."
While his efforts were
ridiculed, Charcot, Braid, Professor Azam of Bordeaux, and other
physicians of the late 1800’s realized that there was a significant
relationship between the mind and the body and that Mesmer, in spite of
his fantastic approach, was "on to" something. Through their own
experiments they were able to hypnotize patients and achieve results.
Hypnosis did not become truly established
again, until after World War I, II, and the Korean War when thousands of
soldiers suffering from "battle fatigue" and trauma were
successfully treated with hypnosis.
In 1955 the British Medical Association
and in 1958 the American Medical Association formally approved the study
and use of Hypnosis. |
